a rose by any other name would smell as sweet...

The other day while reading one of our favorite blogs, Rescued Insanity, I realized that I was mispronouncing her pup Shiva's name. I started to ponder is it "Shee-va" or "Shih-va?" Then I realized people may not know that Havi is pronounced "Ha-vee" with a short a.

We have written before about the origins of Havi's name here.

Which made us wonder - what's the story behind your pup's name?

  2. Thanks for following my blog...I love yours! My mom and dad gave me the name Branson because they wanted something unique, but yet something meaningful to them. On their honeymoon they sailed by Sir Richard Branson's private island in the B.V.I. and my dad is a big fan of his work (in fact he was reading one of his book at the time), so they named me after him. I am off to read about Havi's name now! WOOF!

  3. Bailey was rescued with the name Bailey. He was already responding to it so he kept it.

Katy had another name but would only respond to the word cookie. Mom and Dad refused to have a dog with the name cookie so played with hard "C" names until they found one she resonded to which was Katy.

  4. When Pauley was first pulled from the pound, he was kind of scary looking (very thin, patchy hair & lots of open sores). I wanted to name him something soft & friendly. His middle name (James) is from a German Shepherd that I had hoped to pull & foster, but unfortunately he was put down before I could get him :(

  5. When I rescued Maize she was named Missy...I wanted her to have a fresh start and I am a HUGE University of Michigan fan and I thought Maize sounded close to Missy so it fit! Pug came to me as his his breeder or pedigree name as Bufo Toad and I am a frog girl so my ex named him Pugsley and I wanted to keep the Toad so he got to be Pugsley-Toad.

  6. Our first dog was Shasta (after Mount Shasta, where we spent many happy summers) and Stitch came to us with the name. It fits, he is like the little alien in the Disney movie. So when we adopted Sophie, we decided to stick with the S theme. She was going to be Sammie until we got to the shelter and saw her. My mom just blurted out Sophie. It just fit :-)

  8. She was aptly named Molly McMuscle at the pound and it just stuck, she looks like a little miss Molly.

  9. Elli's named after the punctuation mark: the ellipses (aka "...") (I'm a writer). She has the three perfectly spaced dots down her spine and on her right rib cage. :)

  10. I found that it was really hard to name girl dogs. Also, I had committed to adopting Miss M and it was still a week or two before I was able to get her and all I could remember was that she looked really ugly and like a muppet. I was trying to figure out all kinds of ugly girl names, then we just settled with a rocker girl name. I really wanted to name her Pele because she is so good at soccer, but that's still a boy name.

  12. Chancy was near death when he came to live with us. We named him Chancy because he was getting a second chance for life. That is a sweet picture of Havi, love that face. Hugs and nose kisses

  13. Finn (aka, The Finster, Finnamon and NAUGHTY GIRL) I rescued as a 5 month old with the WORST case of mange I've ever seen - she was bald and bleeding and a mess and adorable with it.. and had HUGE PAWS... figured she would grow into them, thus Fin McCuhl (an Irish giant) - well, her feet are still GINORMOUS but she is not - a petite 50 lb puppy mill shepherd! Llyr (who was called Cash when rescued from 3 years chained in a back yard, never in the house and aka LuLu Bell, Loo and DAMN, HE STOLE AGAIN) got his name from the Welsh God Llyr - Lord of the Dark Ones (Llyr is a black shepherd).

  14. My poor boy pup was named a few years before we got him! :-) The first time I read Harry Potter I fell in love with the name Remus for a Schnauzer (he was supposed to be silver, but who cares) and since it went with the "R" theme it was perfect. Re, or Re-Re, or Remus Nicodemus are his alter egos.

Riley was pretty spur-of-the-moment, but it suits her so well! She also goes by: Rile-sy, Princess, Little Girl, and Ri-Ri.

    I love name posts!
