monday meanderings

Well this weekend was Atlantic City centered, not NYC. Dental Student headed down to the Shore with his college friends for some gambling and yummy eats. AC is a 2 hour car, bus or train ride from NYC and a nice get-away. I stayed home with the Havi-nator and crossed things off the to-do list. Which is about to lead to a spattering of meanderings...

First of all, Havi and I decided to utilize my degree in Public Relations and Social Media and expand the blog a little more. We started a Two Grad Students and a Pittie Facebook Page. We only uploaded our information and some pics so far, but please "like" us and well work on expanding and making it fun all week, seriously - were the only Like so far! I know I promised a while ago we'd fancy up the blog, and Kate at Twenty-Six To Life is quite the inspiration. It's definitely on the to-do list. We love CBS Sunday Morning in this house, and they inspred us as well, because they did a segment on blogs yesterday, especially our (okay, just mine) favorite wedding blog, Style Me Pretty.

I just finished reading Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah with the Best Friend. I loved it. It was a well-written tale of two unlikely best friends. I usually don't like airy, light reads, which I assumed this was. However, it was very well-written with great detail, and I found that I couldn't put it down! I also favor stories of friendship over romance, and this certainly appealed to that. Feel free to friend me on GoodReads, which I have chatted about before!

I saw Midnight in Paris this weekend. I know what you're thinking - how many movies have we seen?! Well, since finals ended four weeks ago I've seen Something Borrowed, Bridesmaids, Hangover 2, X-Men: First Class, and now Midnight in Paris. I can't help it - I LOVE a huge Diet Coke and a big screen. Especially with LivingSocial Fandago deals where you get two tickets for $9.00 (it is usually $15.00 for one ticket in NYC)! I loved Midnight, it was totally vintage Woody Allen. Owen Wilson's character loves Paris in the 1920s and magically gets transported there. Rachel McAdams plays a quite unlikable character - which is a nice change for her! The only warning is you need a bit of classical literature and art knowledge to appreciate some of the references.

Lastly, I use a 2-year-old Nikon camera to take pictures for this blog, Facbeook, and my scrapbooks. Dental Student is in the market for a camera for his Dental portfolio. I was thinking of giving him mine, and getting a new one. I really want to start taking higher quality photographs and am in the market for a new camera. I need suggestions for a reasonably-priced camera for a budding photog. I know so many of you are amateur photographers - so I need your help!

I think that's everything I had to say, my head is a very busy place!
Here comes Monday...!

  1. I have been thinking about doing a FB page for the blog too, but haven't yet committed to it. and I also reeeeally want a new camera because I feel like my pics are so crappy compared to other blogs, but it's just not in the budget right now. I'll be curious to see what equipment people recommend!

  2. I'm right there with you - blog overhaul and new camera. I don't think the camera will happen anytime soon but I'll be watching your progress with interest and in the meantime I need to just get out the instructions and work out how to get better pics with the point and click I've got.

  3. I liked your FB page (although I don't think it counts as a person since it's my 26TL facebook page ... ah well, it's the thought that counts!).

I've been thinking about upgrading my camera too (to a DSLR). Although, I think my camera has been a great "not a DSLR but still takes great photos and let's you learn camera." I think if you don't want to spend the $$$ on a DSLR, there are a lot of nikons and canons that have manual modes that are fun to learn on, but still have "auto" as well :)

  4. I just upgraded to a Nikon 3100 and I am loving it. Comes with the lens - we got ours at Sams club for $599.00. SHop around and if you find a good deal Best Buys will also price match. I would also recommend checking out www.BuyDig.com they have great reviews and fantastic prices - no sales tax. I said hello to Havi facebook :)

  6. Oh, I am jealous of all the movies you have seen. I need to buy some of those fandango deals when I see them!

I bought my sister and her husband the Nikon 3100 for their wedding gift. Great starter DSLR. It is small but built well. I have the nikon d40 which was their old starter DSLR, I love it. Now I just need to learn to use it outside of auto mode.

  7. Sounds like a fun busy weekend! I use my mom's camera that would be way out of my price range if I bought it, it is a canon eos 10d.

  8. I haven't seen a movie at the theatre for ages! Probably not since Toy Story 3. When did that come out? Last year? I am horribly behind the times, apparently. Midnight in Paris sounds like a lot of fun!

I too just kind of started a FB page for my blog. I haven't done much with it yet due to lack of time, but everyone says how important it is so I figured I should suck it up. Maybe I will see you on there! I hope the dental student had a good time!

  9. dental/law students, do you have a DSLR nikon or a point & shoot variety? if it's a DSLR, may i humbly recommend getting a nice new lens (i can suggest an awesome one-- my favorite-- that costs just $100), an online tutorial/class, and maybe a good photo editing software instead of a new camera?

i shoot with a D300 but can take the exact same photos with my older D50, which was a bottom-of-the-line DSLR in 2005 (making it way, way lower quality than the low-end ones now). it's not the camera, it's what you do with it! i promise!
shoot me an email if you want to talk more specifics.

  13. When I get home and have Facebook access, I'll have to like your page. Aleksandra is a photo guru and has great advice! We treated ourselves to a new camera (we rationalize that since we eloped we feel ok spending money on things that make our lives better) but I've learned it really is all about the lens. I'm still learning a lot, but it is really fun.
