the case of the mysterious pee

A few weeks ago Dental Student told me that he walked out the door, and there on the doorstep was pee. Now, I love the man, but this just seemed absurd to me. Obviously Havi had some sort of accident and he missed it. But he swore up and down it was the Bichon or Chihuahua on our floor. Well, this weekend the pee appeared again! It definitely was not Havi's because I had been inside with her for hours! I totally understand a pup needs to mark their territory, and this may be embarrassing for the owner, but um, clean it up? What should we do about out little pee problem?
Yesterday, one of our most dutiful readers, Law Student's mom, said she couldn't comment on the blog. Does anyone know why a random visitor cannot comment, do you need an account? On that vein, how do I respond to comments you guys write? I'm obviously having a little commentary issues. Law Student's mom had wanted to comment because she wanted to know if anyone out there had a recommendation for her adorable Havanese Mushey. He seems to be going through a chew and destroy phase and needs a new CHEW FREE doggie bed and crate mat. She'd appreciate any help!

We have become obsessed with several Chicago-based blogs. But Compassion for Pits is run by a NYC woman with two pitbulls. Her pittie, Winnie, needs surgery and in order to raise money for the expensive ACL surgery she is selling the CUTEST treat jars on our favorite site - Etsy. Please, please, help her out! She is also asking for recommendations of other personalized things she can make for your pup!

Yesterday, Dental Student's AWESOME SIL, told us about Heartsy, a deal site for Etsy! Please leave your email in the comments if you want our referral code to receive a $5 credit!

And some Havi cuteness to get you through a Thursday:

  1. I wonder about commenting etiquette too! Especially when people have questions. Hope one of the more experienced bloggers let us know.
Thanks for the shot of Havi cuteness - much needed!

  2. you are the best!!! thanks soo much for spreading the word!! Fyi- that happens in our building too-people let their dogs pee on the carpet by the elevators and don't clean it up! It stays there for so long until the carpets are cleaned! and btw that tiny amount of pee def. looks like a small male dog marking your door!! I suggest spraying something yucky on the door so when he goes near it he doesn't want to stick around (apple bitters is natural and safe for dogs and seems to work on furniture etc) Good luck with those pesky neighbors!!!

  4. Found your blog recently and love it :), what a sweet pittie you have and two grad students- wow! I thought we were busy but you guys take the cake! Our neighbors seem to think it is okay to let there dogs poop all over in the winter and not clean it up, well guess what is all over the grass now that the snow has melted? I still haven't figured out how to reply to comments, it seems so simple so I am glad I am not the only one with replying issues. Can't wait to read more :)

  5. It is hard to find dog friendly apartments in this area, which is why we waited until we had a house. Congrats on finding one in NY. As for the pee there are supposed to be repellents you can spray that discourage the peeing from areas. You may want to look into some pet safe ones for your entrance area. The last thing you want is a landlord that thinks it is your dog making the mess. Most of them are not going to pursue DNA to prove it isn't your pooch.

  6. You may have Blogger's settings set so that only people with Google accounts (email) or OpenID can comment. To change that: On your Dashboard, click Settings. There's a tab at the top (underneath the regular tabs) that reads Comments. Click it. The second setting there asks "Who can comment?" If you want to allow anonymous readers to comment, select them (this may increase your chance of spam, though). Otherwise, I think Open ID is your best bet. A person's OpenID is their blog's homepage (yours would be: http://twogradstudentsandapittie.blogspot.com)

On Blogger, you can't reply to comments. You can only post your own comment in response (as a new comment) and hope that the people you responded to check back to see what you said. I installed Disqus to my blog, now it's possible to have the Wordpress-like responding system. :)

  7. Hi and hello from Reilly the Cowspotdog. We are always happy to meet new friends and see what interesting capers they get up too. You will be our first New York friend though.

Blogger unfortunately goes through 'periods' of these problems - they annoy the heck out of you for weeks then suddenly are 'fixed'.

Feel free to come on by and say hello

  12. Hi, hi, hi! My name is Mayzie and I found out abouts your bloggie through PBU, too! Havi is so cute and of COURSE she didn't leave that pee. I can't believes you even thought for a little bit that she did. If you ask me, it was The Ninjas. They're always causing trouble around my place.

Um, so, I used to have problems with my beds mysteriously exploding and falling apart, too. So what mom did was get me some old blankies and comforters at Goodwill and put them in my crate. They were a lot cheaper than having to buy me a new bed all the time. Then when I gots a little bit older and they started making better beds for brindle dogs, she got me a new dog bed. I hope that helps!

Come on over and say hi sometime if you gets a chance!

    Wiggles & Wags,
    mayzie

  13. Hey Havi!
Wow, you look like a ton of fun! I found you on PBU and I'm glad to meet you. I live in the woods, so I'm really interested in your city territory. As for comments, I'm somewhat new to Blogville also, but I think the best way to reply to comments is to visit that dog's blog and bark back to them. We all learn more every day. I'm sure that pee is not yours...probably some rotten squirrel left it there!! They are bad critters.
    Grr and Woof,

  15. Glad to meet you, Havi (and your parents, too)! I don't know if I've ever met a pittie, but my mom says she'd love to adopt one someday. She's a softie for the dogs "no one wants."

  16. Miss M used to have a bed-eating issue too. We wrote this post about how we taught Mr. B (who was worse than Miss M) not to chew on stuff: http://pittiesincity.blogspot.com/2011/01/dog-training-teaching-dogs-to-be-gentle.html

  17. Did you guys see this story about rescued Pitties in Albany? I saw it on discussion board and thought it was great that a news broadcast was trying to present them in a positive story for a change.

  18. We just found you via PBU and are now going to follow your adventures which sound so exciting. Not sure about the pee problem, I would stand guard ready to bark as soon as another dog started peeing - what a cheek marking YOUR territory! Dex & Louis x

  19. Gosh, I would love to hear a recommendation for a chew-resistant crate pad. Neptune has destroyed everything we put in his crate, including towels, sheets, blankets, plastic and metal water dishes, but not his Nylabone or similar toys. We bought him a weapons-grade Nylon crate pad, but he ripped out all the stuffing within a month's time. Yikes. Now he just has the shell to lay on. Poor guy.

As for the pee, I'm a little nuts, so I would probably peek out the peep hole when I hear activity in the hallway to try to get to the bottom of the mystery! Then open the door and catch the culprit!
