I stumbled on your blog and am also a (disgruntled) grad student with a pit bull. Luckily, he and my American bulldog make up for the misery that is graduate school. They are total toy destroyers too, especially stuffed toys. I have some very large rope toys that have lasted awhile. The Tuffee dog toys last pretty long too, but are really expensive. I also love deer antlers for their powerful jaws.
