Well, leaving Havi alone in her crate for the longest time ever yesterday (8.5 hours) did not turn out as expected. Havi pulled our brand new comforter that lays on our bed next to her crate through the wires of her crate and chewed a hole in it! We're confident a good tailor can sew it up, and happily that that side of the blanket will be pushed up against the wall in the new apartment. But still, this was not what we planned! Obviously, 8 hours was too much for little anxiety-ridden Havi. Any ideas? (Besides moving the crate away from the bed :p).
So anyone who knows us, knows we loveee saving money in one of the world's most expensive cities. Well, getting Havi didn't exactly further that goal. But, we love deal sites! As of 8:30am Law Student had already received 16 emails full of fun stuff to do in NYC. We've bought manicures, improv shows, dinners, massages, and food cart tours! Last week we learned about PetSimply.com and BarkingDeals.com. That's right, pet deal emails! We already bought our first one, from PetSimply when they featured Natural Balance Training Treats. How do you save money on your pups?
Mostly our pups are a black hole that sucks $$$s! Bilbo's sensitive stomach led to a combination of raw food and prescription kibble so he pretty much eats better than me. Buster had a $3000 surgery on his knee but his rehab is going so slowly we're probably now going to have to pay for some physical therapy. Though it wasn't planned that way, essentially our second jobs pay for the dogs and not much else...
ReplyDeleteGoing to check out those deal sites and see if I can cut down!

So, Groupon for dogs? What a great idea! We were just talking about how whenever we buy something new it's for the pooches. Ok, maybe green dog hoodies aren't necessary, but I guess it's our hobby. And we save money by not buying green hoodies for ourselves.
ReplyDeleteHavi was probably bored. If left alone without puzzles or task oriented toys I would get pretty destructive too. Get some dog puzzles and treat trap toys. :)
ReplyDeleteWe always make sure to give them Kongs stuffed with (sometimes frozen) healthy treats & of course several toys. Thanks for letting us know about PetSimply.com.
ReplyDeleteHmm. Ya know, a great puzzle toy is the Extreme Holee Molee Roller. My pup, Elli, has one and I have been SO impressed with 1) its durability; Elli has an unbelievable ability to tear things to shreds, lol, and 2) the challenge it presents. Kongs are great, and all, but the food is usually pushed to the back of the Kong. The Holee Molee allows the food to flop back and forth, and roll around. I don't actually think it's meant to be a puzzle toy, but I've been surprised as to how well it works as one. :) Elli gets sliced apples and whole bananas in her Holee Molee. It's a mental workout for her. :)
ReplyDeleteI know this is a really old post, but a dog should *never* be crated for more than 3 (MAX 4) hours tops. Even with chews and toys. The dog will almost always develop severe anxiety, not to mention leaving him in there that long is just plain mean. If he's gotta be in the crate when you're away, then be prepared to come back on lunch to give him some "recess" time. I did this for awhile as my boys got used to the house. They are now secure in the fact that I always come back for them, so I give them free reign. I know without a doubt that I won't come home to a shredded living room because I never gave them time to "over analyze" a situation that could result in anxiety.
