Havi and Law Student's first photo! |
I vividly remember when a neighbors beautiful black lab got loose and I was alone outside, I was terrified. When another neighbor got a shih-tzu, I wanted nothing to do with it.
In life, sometimes you get that feeling. You know that "this just feels right" kinda thing. Perhaps it happened at a job, when you met your mate, or bought your first house.
For me, it was when my parent's neighbors/Havi's foster parents sent a photo of then-Baby to me to send around to my friends. Instead, I stood up in my cubicle in the library grabbed my phone and called Dental Student. As anyone in my life or on Pack Walks can attest to - I am very Type A! Just standing up and claiming we need a dog without a plan is very unlike me.
The Photo That Changed It All |
I don't know what it was, but Havi is the ultimate teacher. I mean, I write a blog about a dog. I know every dog in our large NYC high-rise. I know the pups in the local dog run. I volunteer at a shelter. I am no longer scared of pups, and I owe that to Havi. For 20+ years I was missing out on so much.
Who can be scared of this silly girl?! |
My princess! |
Thank you for your patience with the sparse posts this month, life became overwhelming! We are doing a NYC Small Business Promotion Week next week! Stay Tuned!
what a great post, A. that pic of Havi is so cute and it's so interesting to learn the ways in which she has changed you! Maisie has mostly just made me poorer. ;)
ReplyDeleteOur dogs & cats have taught us how important having a schedule & sticking to it is. Pauley has also taught us that you can never have too much patience or too much cuddling :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post! I have actually known other people who were afraid of dogs before they met the dog that "changed everything" and are now super dog lovers. Dog love is powerful!
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I think a lot of people are afraid of dogs, and simply don't want to admit to it, likely because they are ashamed. And what a huge difference Havi has made in your life.
ReplyDeleteMy Poodles are trying to teach me calculus, but it's hard.
ReplyDeleteAgreed - that's a wonderful point, sometimes our pups teach us so much both about ourselves and people in general!
ReplyDeleteMy dad had never had a dog, or any pet before! Then my mom came into his life and when they finally bought a house and moved in together, the momma knew going without a pet was out of the question... In comes Corbin-Foster-Dog. Notice, there was never "Out goes Corbin-Foster-Dog!" Dad can't imagine his life without sharing it with me. It's funny that he had no idea how much I'd change his life in such a good way forever.

Great post. Dogs really are great teachers :)
ReplyDeleteBadger didn't teach me this directly, but thanks to him I found this and other pitbull blogs and learned a lot about shelters, nutrition, training, and generally how to be a better dog owner. Mushroom taught me not to be prejudiced against little dogs.
ReplyDeleteGo Havi! My parents always bring up the photo of me on our way home after picking up our first family dog, an 8 week old lab puppy that we were going to raise for Guiding Eyes for the Blind. I was terrified of the little fluff-ball. And look at me now!
ReplyDeleteIt is so hard for me to imagine you being afraid of dogs! I'm so glad you took a chance on Havi and she was able to teach you so much! :)
ReplyDeletePS - I've been pretty overwhelmed too...I completely understand! :)
My dog Mazzie taught me patience, which I sorely needed as a general matter and most definitely needed if I was going to help her work through all of her issues. We've come a long way .... and I think she has made much more progress than me.
ReplyDeleteMazzie also reminded me of how wonderful it is to give your abosolute all to something that you want for love (as opposed to just for a paycheck or accolades).
XXOO to Havi!
Good for you! Sooo glad you guys got Havi and are here sharing your live with us :). Molly has taught me the importance of patience and that every dog is an individual and that means they have their off days too where everything is scary and the next day everyone is a friend. Brodie has taught me how important it is to not judge a book by its cover- nuf said :)
ReplyDeletewhat a sweet post! i'm so glad you found havi.
