Monthly Feature: Big Dog. Small Budget.

We started this Monthly Feature about three months ago to explain how we live with a big dog on a small budget.  Many people wrote they don't or can't even imagine how much they spend per month.  The simple fact is that we live loan to loan so we have to really contemplate the value of each $ spent.  Additionally, we thought that by sharing the various sites and coupons we use, we may give others good ideas.  Alternatively, if we're spending too much money - we were hoping you would share some good ideas!

So here is our August round-up (only 9 days late)!

4 Dog Walking Sessions with RuffCity DogWalkers - $100
2 Jumbo Antlers from PetFoodDirect with a HomeRun Deal for $15 for $30 - $10.59
Missing Link ProBiotic from PetsTruly - $22.64
Evo Red Meat Formula from ProperPet - $59.99
August Total: $193.22

June: $149.31
July: $111.99
August: $193.22
YTD: $454.52

This is Havi earning her keep by doing her chores around the house and helping make the bed!

  2. We just found about the HomeRun deal site. Without all of the deal sites, our pups would be very sad!

  3. I think you are doing pretty good! This post made me actually add up what we spend on average monthly for the 4 dogs (1 shih-tzu, 1 EXTRA large shih tzu, 1 80lb Boxer and 1 Basset Hound). It's not pretty. We average about $570. monthly. BUT $160 of that is for the Vet where we have a monthly maint plan and includes all vaccines, dentals for all and all the other stuff they all seem to need at some point. Whew! My first apartment was cheaper!

We just tool a look at Home Run and WOW, signing up immediately!

  4. I'm so afraid to do these and see how much we really are spending. After an ear infection, Elderbull testing and follow up, and some new leashes, we probably aren't looking so good.

  5. Hey Havi!
Wow, you are worth so much! Those antlers are always yummy, but tell your peeps that doing laundry is worth at least one good squeeky toy!

  6. Frankly, the girls have been living the good life primarily due to the generosity of our dog trainer (who knows I have absolutely NO discretionary funds right now, and lets me take dog classes for free - I repay her generosity by having her over to dinner at least once a week; she gets paid hourly on the classes (plus a small commission - my small bit doesn't matter much) and as a student, loves free home-cooked meals), and my parents, who find all sorts of excuses to Drs. Fosters and Smith gift certificate. If not for that, they'd be getting kibble, recycled toys, and not much else. However, I'm checking out Home Run right now!

-Dr. Liz (not Fiona the dog, who doesn't really care about the budget, as long as dinner shows up at 5pm on the dot)

  7. I didn't know about this petfooddirect place! I'll have to check that out because Turk loves antlers but they are super expensive at the local doggie boutique!

  8. Are you signed up for the daily deals at doggyloot.com? They're not quite daily, but last 3-4 days or so. Sometimes they're okay and sometimes they are great. Today's deal is $32 worth of bully sticks for $16! Might want to look into it :)

  9. Does Havi demand minimum wage for the time she spends making the bed? That might make your costs go up ;)
